Traffic Jams Tomorrow

A friend of mine calls me every so often – mostly to complain about the traffic…

“It takes me FORTY-FIVE MINUTES!” he shrieks, “To drive EIGHT MILES!”

To him, this is utter nonsense, not to mention an enormous waste of time.

You see, he lives in a town originally designed for 50,000 people, but over the last few decades it has nearly doubled in size.

The result?

Horribly inefficient one-lane roads constantly flooded with cars.

As much as he loves to blame the original city planners who, decades ago, created the current mess, they aren’t really at fault…

They couldn’t have possibly known, more than 100 years ago, how fast the city would grow and what sort of design elements would be necessary in the 21st century.

The same might be said for your business.

As the original founder, it’s hard to say how its needs will change over the next few years of growth…

… and you can’t possibly know for certain what kind of financial systems will best serve it 5, 10, or more years down the line.

For the overall success of your business (and to save your own sanity), you need sound financial systems in place right now so that money matters don’t slow you down.

But that’s not enough.

You also need to be able to look into the future, to see what financial systems and processes will serve you in 2 years… 5 years… even 10 years from now.

The health and value of your business depends on it.

You see, there is simply no point building a finance department which suits you right now, when you are in fast -growth mode.

I mean, how will you manage your invoicing when you’ve got 20 times as many bills to process? (That might be sooner than you think!)

How will you track expenditures when you have 150 people filing receipts every month, instead of 25?

Is the accounting software you are investing in today still going to be fit-for-purpose when your company has doubled or tripled in size?

Long story short, building a great finance department isn’t just about solving your immediate problems.

It’s about building flexible, customisable and fluid processes that work today – and will also support your business as it grows into the future.

The problem is, as I said last week, unless you have previous experience successfully running a finance department, you probably won’t know what you need in place right now.

And it’s even less likely that you’ll be able to anticipate the kind of financial provision you’ll need in the future!

Much like the founders of my friend’s hometown, you’ll be shooting in the dark, making educated guesses and hoping it pans out…

But we can stop that from happening.

Because we run the finance departments for dozens of companies, we know exactly what you need to have in place right now, for your finances to run like clockwork….

…And we also have the expertise to be able to work out what you’re going to need several years down the line.

That way, you can build a truly efficient finance department, which strengthens your position today…

…And will still work beautifully for your business tomorrow, too.

Why you hire the wrong accountants

The company owner took responsibility for building an accounting function which they understood very little about.

They had no idea what an efficient, successful finance department that helps propel a company forward looks like.
